Problem: Recordings keep failing. Sometimes when I record a programme, I get an error message and I lose the recording.

Solution 1:
Recordings fail for a number of reasons. If you schedule the recording and it records - but records the wrong thing - the box might be tuned to two different regions. Reset the channels and manually tune them if you suspect this to be the case. If the unit is on a series record but has missed the programme, check the programme guide to see if future episodes are being recorded. It may have identified the programme as a different series for some reason, so set a series link on any future episodes that are not being recorded.
Other failed recordings can show a problem with the unit. One or two failed recordings do not necessarily mean that your unit has a fault - it could be due to a power cut or your box could have (unluckily!) frozen or crashed prior to the start of the programme.
However, if there are numerous failed recordings and it continues to occur even though you can watch TV OK, it sounds like a problem with the hard disk and this will need to be either repaired or replaced. 0 out of 0 people found this solution helpful.

I have a similar problem. If I don't have any saved recordings the box starts up Ok. If I have recordings on the HD, every time I switch it on it goes to First Install which is very irritating. I spoke with Goodmans Support and was told it could be a HD issue when things have been recorded and was told to format the drive and reset everything. Unfortunately when I recorded again the problem ocurred again. So mine is going back to the shop as it's only a week old! 0 out of 0 people found this solution helpful.
Problem: The unit has just frozen up. It keeps freezing and then shutting itself down.

It can be extremely frustrating when this happens. Most of the time, there isn't much you can do other than turn it off and then on again, at the mains if the power button isn't responding.
However, there are a few things you can check to help prevent it in the future. Number one is check how hot it is. Freezing can happen when the unit isn't properly ventilated or is in a hot place. Make sure all the vents are uncovered and there is nothing on top of it. You might also want to check for system updates. Finally, you might consider turning the unit off and then on again regularly to reboot it. Freezing often occurs when it has been running for a long time, so once a week or so you could try to reboot it by switching it off and on. If you don't want to do this yourself, you might consider buying a timer switch to do this for you at a time you know you won't be using the machine, e.g. 4AM. 0 out of 0 people found this solution helpful.
Problem: brand new [bought this morning] GDB18FVZS2 Freeview Box is not receiving any BBC channels at all. I have rescanned to 'add' channels and retuned to first time installation. Many times. Turned the unit off and on again. No BBC and now no ITV3 anymore either. Anyone that can help? Thanks!

Sounds like the aerial signal may be weak. I've had similar problems in the past (though I always lose the ITV channels). Try plugging it into the strongest aerial you have and tuning it there, then transfer back to where you want to use it. 0 out of 2 people found this solution helpful.
- I only have one aerial, outside, coming in through the window and into a booster. This has worked for the last 10 years but now my old Goodmans set top box died overnight, the new one is not complying. Though I have now taken the booster out and reception is much better. After turning it off overnight [in the hope it would revert to factory settings, which it didn't] and rescanning, still no sign of any BBC channels. Anyone have an idea how to revert to factory settings for this set top box? Thank you!

Problem: I have retuned my Goodmans GD11FVZS1 following the 3 September 2014 Freeview update. Since then I can only control it for a few seconds after unplugging the mains, then putting the plug in again. I can use any control on the remote (no controls on the box itself) for only a few seconds, then control freezes, but the programme that is on will carry on indefinitely. To regain control, I have to pull the mains plug. It seems to have accepted the new channel allocations.
- Sorry its come up twice, an accidental double click!!!

Solution 2:
It's a problem relating to a weak or ineffective capacitor.. you will need to disconnect from the mains.. open the unit and try to visually identify which capacitor is defective..usually a bulging on the cap instead of a flat surface.. if you can't identify the capacitor, use a multimeter to try read of the capacitor. The multimeter should show a steadily declining voltage. In particular if you read a zero voltage use a 9volt battery and connect positive to the positive end of the cap and momentarily connect the negative to the negative end. This will store a small voltage in the capacitor. Try again with the multimeter... if it still reads zero then the capacitor is defective. Remember working with electricity is dangerous and should only be carried out by a qualified person. Precautions should always be undertaken to prevent an electric shock.. a fully charged 9v battery has enough power to seriously injure wear protective goggles and rubber gloves and always ensure a safe electrical grounding for the equipment you are working on. 0 out of 0 people found this solution helpful.
